Barn Cats and Goat Shots and Field Mowers

June 9, 2010

The new pair of barn cats came to the farm today. They’re a mother/daughter pair. We’re really on a role with the mother/child duo’s:

And if you want to go the surrogates route:

The new kitties are sweet, but definitely suited for barn life. The younger of the two is wily. She was upset about being penned up in the barn, so she broke free and climbed to the top of the 20 foot ceiling and got stuck. We got her down, then she ran across the barn and up to the top of the ceiling on that side. We figured at that point she’s on her own and should figure out how to get down if that’s going to be her go-to getaway spot. Once we caught her, she snuggled up and was fine. Must be a gemini.

Her mom, on the other hand – steady as they come. Not sociable, not fearful, not…really anything. She just sat there with this nonchalant, “I don’t really give a crap” look on her face. Must be those blazing seafoam green eyes. That doesn’t really make any sense, but she does have some seriously beautiful eyes.

Earlier today, I gave the LaManchas their vaccinations. Baby boy Amherst got two shots, and a shot of this nasty smelling oral concoction. Mama Merri just got the oral stuff. Basically forced down her throat, then she cough/barfed it up in this foaming mess all over the barn. Thanks.

We’re finally getting around to having the field mowed. It’s completely out of control. The grass is 7 feet tall in some places. We found a guy who will come over with his tractor and cut it down to about 4 or 5 inches. Should be amazing. As soon as he’s done, probably this weekend, we’re putting up the new goat fence!

I hope your goats don’t do the sterile abscess thing following vacs, like one of mine did. If so, it’s messy, but you can deal with it (I did! – every time! 😛 )

Little guy got one. We’re just leaving it for now, hoping it’ll go down of its own accord.
