God in the Wild

May 20, 2010

We’re watching a program on John Muir. I had no idea how genius this man was. His whole philosophy was “finding God in nature.” He grew up a religious man, in a strict religious family and was forced by his father, by the age of 8, to memorize the entire Bible. Once a grown man, he moved from Scotland and walked across America studying and connecting to the wild untouched country. Standing in the tops of tall trees during a storm to see what the storm felt like for a tree. Contemplating the life of a rain drop. Listening to the song of the waterfalls. Asking boulders where they came from and how they came to be where they were.

Discovering new, breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, he remarked that he felt honored and blessed to view God’s creation, and God IN nature.

Man is not above any other life or land, tree or animal, but an equal part of a beautiful and balanced creation of God, in God and with God.

The program is ‘Ken Burns: The National Parks: America’s Best Idea’ and this particular episode is episode 1: ‘The Scripture of Nature (1851-1890)’ available on Netflix watch it now.

The program also mentions that John Muir spent a portion of his life in Wisconsin, attending college in Madison.  Makes me proud of my home state.
